this is the creek bed that runs behind my house… as you can see it is innocent enough looking,, quite beautiful in fact at this moment in time (when there isn’t 10 feet of water raging thru it sounding like niagara falls) and this is where moo moo,, (y’all remember moo moo my rottie don’t you?) saw the three legged deer as it hobbled its way slowly down the creek bed late one afternoon just a week or so ago…
as you can see in the picture,, there is a 12 foot cement retaining wall on this side of the creek,, that comes in handy when the aforementioned 10 foot wall of water is making its way thru the property all winter…. and it was here, front paws up on the retaining wall,, staring intently down into the creek bed, that i found moo moo that fateful afternoon,, as i came in the gate after work….
she wasn’t barking,, she was just staring, mesmerized, at this poor crippled deer as it slowly walked the 1/2 acre of creek bed that was visible to her from this vantage point…
i thought it was so cool,, she could see a deer up close,, and it didn’t run from her,, in fact it totally ignored our presence and just kept walking…. as it walked out of sight moo moo,, evidently realized that once it passed the culvert, (yes the same one she was stuck in a couple of years ago and had to be rescued by the fire department….) that there was no longer a wall between her and this amazing deer,, so she took off like a shot,, and before i could yell “moo!! get back here!!!” she was crashing thru the dense foliage of the bank,, and as fate would have it right into the path of the amazing three legged deer…
who proceeded to jump on top of her,, trapping her beneath itself with its two good front legs,, and beat her with its cute little deer head,, as she cried like a baby and wiggled her way out from under the deer and back to the bank leading up out of the creek…
well,, due to the fact that it is like a 10 foot, nearly vertical drop,, getting down the bank at that particular spot had been a lot easier than it was going to be to get out,, and so…. very frankly,, i panicked,, and as moo was clawing her way back up thru the blackberry thorns and poison oak,, i grabbed her by the collar and yanked her,, all 90 pounds of her,, up the wall and out of harms way..
only to realize,, that in my desire to save my moo moo from the amazing three legged deer from hell, i tore up something in my back and could no longer stand up straight… or sit down.. or go to work or lay down comfortably…….
but hey,, my precious rottweiler was safe, ok??
alas, my back is easing up enough so that i can get back in the saddle,, (or the computer chair,, whichever the case may be),,,, and now that the moment of truth is upon me,, i am speechless…
i have spent the better part of this past weeks pain med fueled sleep fest in front of the television set, watching such subtle delicacies as “cold case files” the first 48″ “intervention” and my personal favorite, “lockup- raw”…. nothin’ like watching guys pull hard time for some of the same stupid shit a lot of other people (not me of course….) have done and got away with to make you feel like you got the world by the balls…
so all the analytical shit i had already written before i was rendered out of commission,, is safely tucked away in draft,, and will remain there until i am hormonally hostage enough to bring it out and wade around in my own shit again… in other words… i have no idea where i am going from here… but i think it is safe to say… i am back!!!

A great post, paisley. You really convey well the bond you have with moo moo (terrific name), and your own awe of the three-legged deer. A feisty animal!
I’m sorry you hurt your back so badly, but at least modern medicine helped you out of it. Glad you saw some entertaining TV too. No Olympics?

Your injury doesn’t sound too serious, glad to hear you’re feeling better. Never underestimate a three-legged deer, sounds like moo moo found out the hard way. Take care, Jodi.

Wonderful to find you are blogging away again!
What an incredible story! I thought I was the only one who had weird reasons for being incapacitated! (My best one is still when I walked backwards up my garden path, dreaming like an idiot over a boyfriend. I forgot that there was a cactus plant at the end of the path and I sat not so gracefully in it! Being not very tall, my little legs hoisted well into the air in the process! Boyfriend turned! I yelped with cactus spikes in the bottom! You can imagine the rest! I was in pain for some weeks!)
Seriously, I hope all is well with you now!
Welcome back!

The three-legged deer sounds like something from a Celtic legend. I can’t believe you hauled Moo Moo over the wall. Ooooh, that would’ve hurt. So glad you’re back. It hasn’t been the same without you!

Love that deer, what a survivor. Glad MooMoo was unhurt and that you’re now better. Great post.

Good to have you back!

I’m not sure that they’ve had you on enough pain medication! From past experience, I believe pain meds and writing poetry are a very good combination! The trick is to write, then file the material away for editing when your body (and mind) are back to normal! Every level of consciousness has its advantages … and writing has to be better than watching “Cold Case Files”, doesn’t it? I caught an episode (or part of one) as I folded my laundry the other day and, let’s just say that your stories are MUCH more riveting than theirs! At any rate, I’m glad to see that you’re back … and to hear the story behind your disappearance! (As usual, your stories are all spell-binders!)

Sometimes a break from our normal routine is a good thing; too bad yours had to occur because of an injury, though! Glad you are on the mend!
Love the voice in your prose!

What a glorious creek and healing greens! A wild story, glad you’re all in better frames. Looking forward to reading a paisley post with greater frequency! Stay well!

Glad to have you back! That was an experience with moo. You know were’re getting way too old to be lifting rotts; but I’m glad you rescued him. Dogs really do make better friends than any human I’ve ever known. Peace, Light and Love. . . CordieB.

and I for one are happy you are..that will teach you to mess around with three legged deer..:)))..

First of all, I’m amazed by the survival methods of that deer. Sheesh! I guess she’d have to be able to take care of herself to make it in the wild. Poor Moo-Moo. I understand putting your pups safety before your own. I’ve done it too, but fortunately come out unscathed. I’m glad your back is better. Tooth pain and back pain are the two worst in my book.

Hugs Paisley, glad to see you back. I have had on and off issues with my neck and upper back since a bad accident. I would have rathered break both legs and my arms than deal with the back pain. So my heart goes out to you and hope your recovery keeps getting better and better. Moo-Moo is one lucky pup to have a mum like you!

Too bad you didn’t get a photo of the deer. What a trial that must be to a wild animal. Glad Moo Moo is safe. Perhaps no more chasing deer will run through the brain. if there is a next time. Glad to know your back is recovering your being a hero. Use Moo Moo as a pillow.

Wow. What a completely rotten invisible friend I am to have missed this. Of course women can lift cars for their loved ones…Sometimes, mindlessly watching reruns on television can be a godsend. Sounds blissful. Glad you’re on the mend.
