retribution
1. requital according to merits or deserts, esp. for evil.
2. something given or inflicted in such requital.
3. the distribution of rewards and punishments in a future life.
just a note to anyone that is thinking about self hosting… a year ago i signed up with host gator,, and was dissatisfied immediately with the level of service,, so i transferred my account to midphase…
today was evidently the renewal date on the domain name whypaisley.com… host gator,, in the true spirit of good business relationships, never notified me that my domain name was coming up for renewal,, as i was not being hosted by them.. instead they whisked my domain off immediately to something called retribution,, and will not release it for renewal by me, nor transfer to my current host for an indefinite period of time.. sooooo i had to purchase a new domain name whypaisley.com thru my current hosts, midphase..
and now as you can plainly see,, in the midst of changing domain names…. all of my images are gone????? it seems wordpress in her infinate wisdom attrinutes them all to the domain anme,, and they dont travel with the rest of the blog….
somehow,, a free blogger or wordpress account sounds really good right now…..
please let this be a lesson to any of you that are self hosted (or thinking about going there),, there is a lot of bullshit involved in self hosting… and when you are more or less a self taught novice like me,, it can get really complicated… and heaven forbid you ever have to change hosts.. i guess ex-hosts are a lot like ex-boyfriends,, if they get a bug up their ass,, they will not give you back your stuff,, and there is not a damn thing you can do about it…
please be kind enough to change all of your links to my sites to whypaisley.com (and that would be /justpaisey, for just paisley,, and /secret, for secret secret) if you have any problems let me know… the old domain name will not be redirecting you to this one,, as a huge part of my retribution is host gator has turned my old domain into an advertisement for all things paisley…. great…
i will play with this some more later,, i am BTFO on it all right now……

so sad to hear that but as always, not everything in the blogosphere can go smoothly just like real life, I have changed the address to your sites in my blogroll, it’s no problem changing them
but you have had that why-paisley for a while haven’t you? it’s so unfair somehow
good luck

Sorry. Blogging can be a bitch. Will change your domain now. Hope this ends your problems

So what I’m wondering about is copyright. The content is copyrighted and connected to the domain. Something is extremely fishy and although it does make self hosting look bad, someone’s at fault here and is liable. I guess they figure we’re not going to hire anyone over it, though. Did you hear about the guy who purchased the pizza dot com domain years back who just sold it for millions? You’ve got lots of things connected to that domain, and they want you to pay for your work. I seriously smell a very stinky rat. Are there any lawyers out there who specialize in blog law? I’m thinking they’re going to be a hot commodity soon… I’ll change your links, but I’m pissed. I hate this kind of shit.

There are no words!!!! I am so choked for you! You put your heart and soul into something…it’s just wrong, a pile of doggy do do! Too bad there wasn’t something we could do as a collective!
All the best on the new site!

That’s really horrible. I’m sorry to hear that. I would have half a heart attack if PWB was self hosted and just disappeared one day, taking away things I worked so hard on. Hugs! Sorry you are going through this.

How cold and awful of them. I am sorry you are going through this. Big hugs.

wondered what happened–sorry for your trouble

So how does one greet another after a hiatus not determined by their own actions?
Welcome back works for me!

Self-hosting is one thing I have no intention of doing.

Dirty rotten bastards. What a mess. I’ll change my blogroll accordingly.

That’s terrible. I use Bluehost, and they seem pretty top notch so far. I would hope that this sort of thing won’t happen. I have too many domains floating around so I’m sure some of them will go the way of the dodo sans my knowledge (or caring) however I would not want to lose my primary domain. Extraordinary.

What a pain… particularly as the pictures you use are such an important part of your blog! Have changed your address in my reader so will continue to follow your story!

I’m sorry to hear about this trouble but I’m sure your creativity will not be held back. Good luck.

holy shit. That BLOWS….big time

HostingMatters is an excellent shared/dedicated hosting out fit. They’re a tad pricey but like everything else you get what you pay for.
I came to the conclusion that wordpress.com and/or blogger was the way to go when I realized how much time I was burning hacking the templates and trying to make them look right in good browsers and IE too. Way too much trouble unless you’re web designer extraordinaire and a hot shot on Apache, PHP, and probably Linux too.

So sorry, Paisley. That’s ridiculous what happened to you.
I’m glad that your plowing forward.

I have a blog through blogger (blogspot) and also my own domain - . Blogspot is super easy to use, but Dragonhaven is a repository for some of my writing (especially poetry) and has the advantage that I can index it. However I have experienced several problems with it.
I am sorry to hear of your domain problems. It must be heartbreaking to lose so much.
May 30th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Yeah. I feel really bad that you lost all of your shit. My domains automatically renew, but I still keep my blog at wordpress regardless. I have enough space and bandwidth, but I never really felt like going through the hassle of always upgrading it and whatnot. I did have my personal blog hosted at my site, but I moved that when I started my poetry blog.
I’m sorry I haven’t been by much in the last few days. I’ve been out of state and haven’t had much time to use a computer. My sister graduated from boot camp today. I’m actually not even on a computer right now, I’m typing this on my phone.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Okay, so now that I’m over my rant on this, I have used midphase from the start and have had absolutely no problems. They’ll check with you about renewal WAY ahead of time. I was wondering about your pictures, tho…Do you use flickr or picassa, or???
May 30th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
OH!! Now I understand Jodi! Oh shit! that is so unfair, Im so so sorry xo
May 30th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
I cannot believe they turned your old domain into a site about paisley. What the? It seems to me that these companies sometimes go out of their way to be deliberately unhelpful. It’s true, ex-hosts are like ex-boyfriends. Hahaha. Glad to see your sense of humour is still intact. XX

This is truly any blogger’s nightmare. When I have deleted past Blogger Blogs they have saved my domain name, forbidding anyone else to use it. It’s kind of saved for me in limbo, in case I ever want to reuse it again in the future for another blog or another incarnation of the same blog. Blogger isn’t perfect. But compared to this they are professionals.

What a freaking injustice!!! I guess that’s why they call it self hosting, because you are truly on your own. The only way to prevent losing your domain name is to actually buy it - that can cost hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars. Did you do a 301 redirect to make sure you didn’t lose your page rank? I think there is a wordpress plug in that can do it for you but it may be too late. I’m really sorry to hear about this. I will go through all my old posts where I linked to many of your articles so they will be correct. It may take me a little while though. I changed the one in my blogroll already.

[...] Retribution - from Why Paisley. This post pissed me off because her hosting service changed her domain name (the removal of the dash between why and paisley) and gave her no options. I suppose it could happen to anyone. She lost all her page rank and as far as I know, the change prevents her from doing a 301 redirect because she can no longer access the old domain. If she had psychic powers, she could have preemptively redirected before all this happened - but that’s a little much for any host to ask for. Because she is such a brilliant writer, it really bothered me to see this happen. Please read her great article and fix any links you have to her. [...]
