she languishes in the window seat
peering dreamily thru sunlit glass
upon the lush, rolling hills of wild flowers
and endless seas, of emerald grass

on the breeze the scent of hyacinth
and fresh baked, cinnamon apple pie
kept warm by a sun that never sets
held aloft, in springs eternal azure sky

she is adorned, in the crispest organdy
trimmed in exquisite italian lace
as a halo of flame kissed ringlets
frame, her inordinately delicate face

she is a vision, of unattainable perfection
that exists solely inside her own head
where she remains, inadequacies prisoner
in a cage made of gingerbread…

something very creepy about this, though it’s very good, shudder

Puts a whole new slant on ‘Hansel and Gretel.’ A cage is a cage after all, whether it be made from gingerbread or steel. The image in the photo is exquisite.

Caged in gingerbread– if only it were so easy to make such an image of perfection crumble. For only in acceptance can we feel love….

Hi… I just now found your new site. The old one came up with your last poem (for about the last four or five days) and just now was the first time it sent me here. Oh, well, no harm no foul… I hope you had everything saved. Good to see you back!

I don’t know why, but after reading this poem I thought of that old Bettie Davis movie, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” The idea of a woman living inside a prison of her own making, beutiful, fragile, untouchable. Great poem.

The last stanza really got me by surprise… this poem is true for many of us I guess.

I think this is for me the most beautiful and memorable post I’ve read written by you Paisley. It has so much happening in it. Delicate, evocative, fun, very unique….great work. Thanks for sharing.

and yet so many live in cages of their own making….i liked this very much, especially how you chose to make her cage of gingerbread….delicate and fragile with the ability to crumble ever so easily…just like her.

A cage is a cage, whether it be of our own making or someone else’s. It also reminds me of cages put around women in general. Sure it looks good on the outside, we’re moving in sphere’s we never dreamed possible. But we are still being held back, though it is not so easily recognizable now. The cage has become more sumptuous, enticing us to stay.
