It was a thing of beauty and was sent
To live its life out as an ornament.

quoting frost,, i wound
a thin leather strap
ever so gingerly
around its slender
green thorned neck,,
and proceeded to
dangle it, ceremoniously
from the rafters
of the woodshed..
for weeks,, i watched
as the blood
of its once red petals
pooled and dried
to a mutted sepia stain.
as its thin green leaves
were inscribed
with the brittle beauty
of everlasting life..
today,, it adorns
my mantelpiece
as delicately fragile
as the corpse
of a young girls dream,,
eternally etched
upon the heart
of a lonely old woman…
